Rs 125 crore deal between Rakesh Roshan and Eros International for the rights of Hrithik- starrer, Kites

Hrithik-Kangana-Barbara Mori starrer Kites, produced by Rakesh Roshan, attracted many media companies, Eros International being one of them.

Eros International then negotiated a deal for the rights of Kites and offered Rs 125 crore to Rakesh Roshan.

Though initially Rakesh agreed, he withdrew the deal because it meant that Eros would have ‘perpetual rights’ of the film.

So what went wrong? Our well-placed source from Bollywood trade reveals, “When Eros International sent the agreement to Rakesh, the deal was inked in such a way that it would give perpetual rights to Eros International.

That did not go down well with Rakesh. So, he backed out.”

Elaborating on what ‘perpetual rights’ means, our source explains, “When a company acquires perpetual rights, it becomes the owner of that film for a minimum period of 33 years.”

Despite a text message, Rakesh Roshan remained unavailable for comment. On the other hand, President of Eros International (India), Sunil Lulla said, “No comments.”

Kites talks about the chemistry between two people - Hrithik and Barbara Mori - who come from a different space and culture.

In the movie, Hrithik’s and Barbara’s characters do not understand each other’s language, but communicate through body language. Kites should start rolling by the end of this month and is expected to hit the theatres by mid-next year.

The film features Hrithik Roshan, Kangana Ranaut and Latin actress Barbara Mori and is directed by Anurag Basu.
