Farhan Akhtar's Rock-n-Role!

Hey Ya, I heard it through the grapevine... Farhan Akhtar, who successfully donned the director's hat with Dil Chahta Hai , hasn't only put on the actor's garb but has also worn the singer's bandana. The filmmaker who plays the lead role – that of a music band's lead singer – in the musically inclined Rock On has actually sung six of the nine tracks of the album himself. Looks like the boy is 'born to run'.

Debutant director Abhishek Kapoor was insistent that each of his actors learn to do the part they're playing. "I can't have a lead singer in my film who doesn't know how to sing. How will it look authentic then?" he tells us. So while Farhan trained with Shankar Mahadevan, Purab Kohli who plays the drummer in this one was tutored by Linzie D'mello. Arjun Rampal learnt the guitar from guitarist Chandresh Kudwa, and the much talented Luke Kenny was already an ace at the keyboard!

Four months of rigorous training has given this gang of guys confidence enough to perform live. 'Sounds like teen spirit?' The 'band' plans to have 'shows' in various cities of the country – Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Calcutta and Delhi. "We call ourselves the 'Magik Band'," informs Farhan, whose long, curly tresses have now been cropped. Not many know that Akhtar is an ace at the guitar and has been playing the instrument for nine years now.

It was the Guns-N-Roses song - Appetite for Destruction - which Farhan heard at the age of 14 that made him want to be a 'rockstar'. "And it was my appetite to be a rockstar that made me grab the opportunity of playing the lead singer in Rock On . It is a wild fantasy being realized," he tells us, laughing.

Uncannily, Farhan and Saif Ali Khan, who is also passionate about the guitar, will come together once again in Akhtar's next movie, Voice From The Sky . So while we expect much music mania on the sets of this one, we'll first wait to check out the singer in Farhan. Let's hope his is truly the 'voice from the sky'.
